It's the early half of 2017 when I found the "Lane of Planes" (called "Lane 180" for the rest of this article), which led me into the world of aviation photography.
In comparison with other photo-shooting spots like Bin Jiang Market and Air Force One Restaurant, situation in Lane 180 is much worse. The ground is uneven and the space is compacted. Parking cars or motorbikes around it is far from convenient. And make no mistake, you can always find dogs' shit here. So please be careful not to step on these "landmines".
But I, along with other aviation-crazy photographers, still love to come to Lane 180. Our reason is simple. It has the shortest range from runway (about 100m). That's roughly half of the range in Air Force One Restaurant and one-third or one-forth of that in Bin Jiang Market. And above all, you can't find better vision in other places.
When planes are taxiing to the starting line of runway 10, people along Lane 180 can almost see pilots' faces. If the plane is big enough, words can never describe your feeling when facing them. This C-130 just looked like an American brown bear standing right in front of you.
Besides, it's the engines' noise during taking-off which drives us to become aviation-crazy photographers. If you have chances to take planes' pictures or videos in rainy days, you will see this amazing pictures as I show below.
Parts of this edited video were shot in Air Force One Restaurant on the other end of runway.
5 to 10 seconds before landing is one of my favorite timing for taking planes' photos. And in Lane 180, I have the best vision for this.
The left side of Lane 180 is more than one meter higher than this lane itself. You can take planes' good pictures from where you stand seconds before they land, with elevation angle, of course. Planes' altitude at this time will be just 50 or 60 feet or even lower (helicopters' might be higher). If the incoming planes should be Boeing 767/787, Airbus A330 or C-130 military cargo planes, photos you take---with wide-angle lens---would be amazing.
Once the airport is operated with runway 28 in case of change in wind direction, you can't take planes photos when they are preparing to take off. But I think it will make you feel good when planes are running toward you and taking off.
You can visit Wikipedia's pages (mandarin only) to understand controversies around Lane 180. For years, the military and Civil Aviation Agency have been warning people not to take pictures of the airport and planes in it (I have been shouted at by soldiers of air forces). However, most of aviation-crazy photographers actually ignore those warning or even lean on the fences to take photos.
Closure of Lane 180 is near and construction works started in bottom of 2018. That means the photos and videos I took on the 21st of December, 2018 are my last memories in Lane 180.
One and half years is not a long time. I'm glad to share some of my works here with all of you and longing for chances to work with you guys.
